What Are Renewable Resources?

They say that nothing lasts forever, and while that is true there are certain things on this planet which occur naturally and continually. These are renewable resources, things that we can use without depleting their quality or quantity. We will use this term synonymously with renewable energy on this site, as this is what we are interested in.

Some of the renewable resources that we have access to, and how we refer to them as a renewable energy source, are:
·   The Sun (solar energy),
·   The wind (wind power),
·   The heat in the ground (geothermal energy),
·   The energy in moving water (hydroelectric power),
·   The energy stored in plants (biomass energy).

How to Utilize Renewable Resources

There are many ways to utilize the renewable resources that we have available to us, in fact there are usually multiple ways of using each resource. Some of them are as follows:

·   Solar Energy: Electricity production with PV solar panels and heat energy with solar thermal systems.
·   Wind Power: Electricity production with wind turbines, and heat energy with air source heat pumps.
·   Geothermal Energy: Electricity production with geothermal power plants and heat energy with ground source heat pumps.
·   Hydroelectric Power: Electricity production from hydroelectric dams, run-off-the-river systems, and ocean energy e.g. tidal power. Heat energy can also be produced with water source heat pumps.
·   Biomass Energy: Electricity production in direct combustion power plants, and heat energy when used in a boiler.
